American Queen Voyages provides a wonderful service in its hop-on, hop-off bus routes in each city and on each river itinerary that it operates. Passengers walk off the ship and straight onto waiting buses with clear signage at each stop along the route at the attractions in town. I had been on voyages on the Mighty Mississippi River and even a couple in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake rivers that traverse through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These itineraries are fairly well known, but I was fascinated to see what an Ohio River cruise was all about.

Town's early economy was based mainly on cargo and passenger shipping (by steamboats). Since the mid-19th-century the economy was boosted with the opening of the Baltimore-Ohio Railroad (1828), Belpre-Cincinnati Railroad (1860), Ohio Valley Railroad (1873). Steamboats regularly transported passengers between Marietta and Parkersburg WV (West Virginia). The Pure Oil Company (now Unocal) was founded in 1914 by the Dawes brothers.

I was happy to accept an invite from American Queen Voyages to review this special itinerary. With the Lower Mississippi states at their hottest and muggiest during the summer, the bulk of the summer is split between mostly Upper Mississippi sailings and a select few Ohio River sailings in late June and into July. The great city of Cincinnati sits on the north bank of the Ohio River, which splits it from the state of Kentucky. The best way to appreciate the cityscape on either side of the river is by floating along it. The stunning River Queen is part of the BB Riverboats fleet of old-timey paddleboats. This charming white and red boat plies the Ohio River for two hours at sunset, as the lands of Kentucky and the Ohio city of Cincinnati are daubed in the warm glow of the fading light. There is also live music on board, setting a jolly tone as you explore this lovely stretch of water. The current-day town's economy is largely based on ferromanganese with the French company Eramet operating a large refinery here.
